Hydrofoils called Flying Dolphins leave the Piraeus Port in Athens several times a day. The trip takes about one hour 35 minutes and costs 25.50 euros, or $36 at $1.42 to the euro, one way. Hydra is only 45 miles from Athens, one of the easiest Greek isles to reach. In many ways it is what it appears to be: a quaint tourist island, with jewelry and gift shops and overpriced Wi-Fi cafes flanking the horseshoe-shaped port.

The Dutches' , A Budding Singer Walton,

Walton, a budding singer known as The Dutchess, has been named by the authority on world records as the woman with the longest fingernails. Christine "The Dutchess" Walton, from Las Vegas, has nails that when combined are the length of a killer whale, according to Guinness World Records

Walton was in New York City on Wednesday to help launch the 2012 edition of the Guinness World Records book, which goes on sale later this month.

She said her twisting and turning nails - which measure a total of 10 feet two inches on her left hand and nine feet seven inches on her right hand - rarely prevent her from performing her everyday activities.

However, she admits she has problems getting things out of her pocket, and uses her knuckles to text on her cellphone.

But Walton, who is also raising a family, does her own nails and makeup, and works around the house with few problems.

"I hate all the cleaning, but I do it. And the makeup, I only wear so much."

Lee Redmond from Salt Lake City, Utah, had not cut her nails since 1979.

Their combined length was more than 28ft (8.5m), with the longest nail - on her right thumb - measuring 2ft 11in (89cm), Guinness said.

Ms Redmond suffered serious injuries in the crash, but is expected to make a full recovery.

A local newspaper, the Deseret News, said she was a passenger in a sports utility vehicle (SUV) at the time of the accident.

Her nails were "damaged beyond repair", according to the Guinness World Records website.

Karva Chauth: Fasting for husbands' long life

Married women fast from morning for their husbands' long lives on Karva Chauth. They end their fast in the evening only after seeing the full moon and break it after their husbands offer water and food to them. The custom is generally followed by north Indian Hindus.

On this day, women dress up in their best in traditional attire with mehndi on their hands and gorgeous attire. The festival is not only important for married women but also for newly-wed women.
Women sit in a circle and pass puja plate to each other even as the family's most elderly women recite Karva chauth katha.Karva Chauth ???????

A lady who has been observing Karva Chauth for the last 28 years shared its rituals. She says, "Karva means a small pot filled with water which is placed in front of Lord Ganesh. On this day, we worship Lord Ganesh for our husbands' long life. After fasting for the whole day, we follow certain rituals in the evening before we take food or water. Married women who observe fast will see the moon through the sieve. After this ritual, they see their husband through the sieve."

So, why do married women fast for their husbands? A woman says, "Married women consider their husbands as gods. So if devotees can fast for the Lord, then married women can definitely observe fast for their husbands."

The most common fasts are

  • Surviving on water.
  • Eating only fruits and vegetables.
  • Eating only one meal a day.
  • Giving up non-vegetarian food.
  • Eating on alternate days.

Expert speak
"When you fast, a lot of toxins are released from the body," Setalvad says. You will feel lethargic and moody, but those are just signs of toxics being released.
Nutritionist and fitness expert Asha Bachanni says fasting also helps in weight loss. "Carbohydrates and glucose in the body are used up during a fast. This then breaks down fat cells," she says.
Fasting can help slow the aging process, adds Bachanni. "Normally, the body's energy is used up by the digestion process. During fasting, the body focuses on cleansing, boosting the repair mechanism of the body," she explains.
